Thursday 18th August, 2011 – Dunsford (Chagford Show)

After waiting around this morning to meet Jacki (the lady who is cleaning the house on Thursdays), we headed for the Chagford Show.  Paid our £7.50 to go in and were most surprised with what we saw.  The show was quite big.  Lots of horse activity from tiny ponies to large draft horses (shire breed). Also large pavilions of local produce and crafts as well as the usual exhibits of cakes, handicrafts, flowers, vegetables etc.  The vegetables were huge!  I have no idea how they managed to get the carrots and parsnips out of the ground without breaking off the roots.

How do you get carrots out of the ground like that?

Watched a few horse events while we had lunch and then they had a display from some trick bike riders called ‘Savage Skills’.  They were pretty impressive.  Amazing how high they can jump a bike from a standstill.

After the show we called in to Chagford town.   Chagford is a busy community with an unusually wide range of shops for a village of this size. One general store in the town square was amazing.  It went on and on through several rooms stacked from floor to ceiling with stock.  I have no idea how they would do a stock-take.  The village is also known for its vibrant arts community and we visited one gallery which had an impressive range of works.

Town Square - Chagford

Chagford
Archaeological remains confirm that a community has existed in Chagford for at least 4000 years. In historical times, Chagford grew due to the wool trade and from tin mining in the area.  In 1305 it was made a stannary town where tin was traded.
