TRIP LIST

Wednesday 27th June. Carawine Gorge to Well 33 (Near Kunawirritji Community)

Left early this morning (7:30am) to travel to Punmu Community to get fuel before 12 o'clock.  We had read that the bowser is closed from 12 to 2.  Arrived with about 3 minutes to spare but no one in sight.  A man came by carting garbage bins with a tractor and trailer and said he would let someone know we were there.  Anyway, we had lunch while we waited and someone did turn up around 1 pm.  Filled up (discount for cash $2.50 per litre instead of $3).  Called into the Community store and had an ice-cream.  The store was quite well stocked.  We had been served fuel by the Superintendent and he seemed to be pretty organised.  Jill had seen something about a barrel train used in Punmu.  44-gallon drums cut in half with wheels on that are towed around to pick up the kids for school.

On the way to Punmu, we once again passed the Telfer Mine, leaving the Telfer Mine Road and headed east along the Wapet Road (also known as the Kidson Track).  We won't be on the actual Gary Junction Road until tomorrow.  Passed by Lake Dara - a huge salt lake.  Lots of camel prints in the salt and at one spot someone had driven onto the lake and got bogged.  Hope they had fun digging themselves out!!

Camp tonight was at Well 33 (on the Canning Stockroute) near Kunawirritji Community where the Canning Stockroute crosses the Wapet Road.  We arrived just on sunset.  A pretty sky with the windmill in the foreground.

Quite a few others here, mostly people doing the Canning.  At the moment the Canning is flooded south of where we are and everyone has to take a 400km detour around through Karlamilya National Park.  That wouldn't be a lot of fun!

Another great fire.
