TRIP LIST

Thursday 10th September - Lake Maligne, Jasper

A nice lazy start this morning. Breakfast in town and then the 48 km drive out to Maligne Lake for a boat tour of the lake at 12:00.

As it turned out our booking had not been conveyed through so we had to wait until 12:30. They shouted us a coffee and a rice cake for our troubles which was nice of them.

The boat trip was a highlight. We went up the lake as far as Spirit Island (which is not really an island but that's another story). It's called Spirit Island because views from there are supposed to capture the spirit of the Rocky Mountains.  We couldn't argue with that. It would have to be one of the prettiest spots on earth.

Our guide was excellent and told us a lot about the geography, history and animals found in the area. Saw a couple of Mule Deer which had just swum across the lake.

On the way back from the lake we called into Maligne Gorge. Their gorges are quite different from anything we have seen in Australia. These gorges have been cut straight down into the rock by weathering. At one point the gorge was 50 metres deep with a mass of water rushing through and still narrow enough for a squirrel to jump across. Simply amazing stuff.

Back to Jasper and some shopping for tea. We are in a co-ed dorm tonight which will be a new experience for us. We're told it will be pretty empty so we may have our wing to ourselves.
