TRIP LIST

Friday 1st July 2011 - Singapore

This morning we went on the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus.  A bit of a rigmarole getting to it as we had to get on a little bus which took us to the transport hub where we had to get our tickets - with no explanation of what was going on along the way.  The organisation was a little to be desired. The weather is much hotter today and we hadn't brought out hats for the open-top bus.  In fact, the guide on the bus mentioned that Singapore has two seasons - hot and very hot.

Got off the bus near Singapore's famous water lion (can't remember the real name) and had a cup of coffee at Starbucks (which appears to be a reliable choice).  We were overlooking Marina Sands.  Three towers with a boat-shaped park sitting across the top.  There is a lot of interesting architecture in Singapore.

We then spent some time at the Botanical Gardens and in particular the Orchid Gardens - quite amazing.  Hopped off again at Orchid Road (the main shopping strip) for lunch.  I'm not sure how all the shopping centres manage to make money.  There must be hundreds (??).  They obviously would not want the bottom to fall out of the tourism market.

We were going to walk up to Little India but decided we didn't have time as we had booked to go on the night safari at 6pm.  That will have to wait for another time.

Tonight we are off to the zoo and fortunately, the organisation was a little better but still, the microphone wasn't working properly on the bus.  Was quite a way to the zoo - time for a brief nap.

Lots of people at the zoo so we had to queue for quite a while before getting on the tram.  Here they were very well organised so it wasn't too much of an ordeal. We were able to see lots of animals quite near the road and the big cats, lions, tigers and leopards.  At one stage you get off the tram and go for a walk.  We could have had a lot more time here but rather than go on a guided tour with its time constraints, it would have been better to use public transport to get there and home.  Presumably, there are public bussed that make the run.
