TRIP LIST

Thursday 21st July 2011 – Uig to Fort William

Went for a walk to the wharf this morning.  From Uig ferries go to Lochmaddy and Tarbet in the Outer Hebrides.

Drove further north to the 'Museum of Island Life'.  There was an original 3 room crofters cottage (lived in until 1957) built of stone and thatch.

At one stage 14 people lived in the cottage.  Originally the thatch would have been held on the roof with heather ropes attached to large stones.  For the past 100 years or so the heather ropes have been replaced with chicken wire netting.  In the children’s room, there were box beds.  They had 4 posts and a ‘wooden’ ceiling with curtains all around.  The parent’s bed was similar.  I guess built this way the beds would have been warmer.  The children’s beds would have had 3+ children in them.

Called in at Kilt falls where the water fall falls into the sea.  Then to Portree for a coffee at the Arriba Café.  The view of the harbour was lovely although only available from two tables.  They even had soy milk for the coffee.

On the road again to Plockton.  Just before the village we saw some very photogenic highland cattle.

Plockton was a cute little town on the water.  Parked the motorhome in the street (only just fits).  After a short walk, had lunch in the van and then on the road to Fort William.

Called in briefly to Eileen Donan Castle.  On the way into Fort William, we could see a mountain with snow on it.  We assume that it is Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.

The restaurant bar at the caravan park had wireless internet so we did a search for a day trip to Staffa Island.   Saw a red grouse in the hedge on the way from the caravan park to the restaurant.
