When we called into Elephant rock there were tsunami warning notices up for the previous night. Apparently, it had been downgraded to 6 inches so was all a bit of a fizzer. To view the cave they have constructed a lift which travels over 200 feet down through the rock. No sea lions in the cave today (they come into the cave in winter) but there were plenty on the rocks just outside. The cave is huge, the world's largest in fact.
On to Florence where we had lunch at Mo's, a floating restaurant in the river in the old town. Most of the towns along the coast have an 'old town' section (in fact some towns are all 'old town') - quite quaint. There are also lots of bridges from when this road (Highway 101) was built between the wars so that the US could defend its western coast. The bridges have been restored and are a great asset to the area.
Next stop was at the Oregon Dunes near Winchester Bay. Quite an amazing area, I guess a bit like Frazer Island with huge sand dunes everywhere and clumps of trees growing through the dunes. There are a lot of ATV tours into the dunes but no time for that sort of nonsense. Tonight we are staying in Gold Beach. Had a walk on the beach before tea. A lovely beach apparently but not at all like our Australian Beaches. Lots of gravel on the beach and some fairly muddy sand.
