TRIP LIST

Thursday 1st October - Gold Beach to Westport

We have been in Redwood country today!

After leaving Gold Beach this morning we travelled along a very beautiful coastline helped by the fact that it was not as hazy this morning as it has been.  Lots of sea stacks and natural bridges.  We then crossed the Californian border to Crescent City where we called into the information centre and called at the mammal rescue centre.  Even though it was closed we could see several sea lions and harbour seals in ponds.  Also saw some sea lions on a pontoon in the harbour.

A coffee at Starbucks (the only place that we can find Jill's soy milk in the US) before heading off to the Newton B Drury Scenic Parkway through the redwoods.  These trees are magnificent.  So tall!  Went for a walk to the Big Tree and called in at Ranger Headquarters.

From there it was on to Trinidad for lunch.  Trinidad is a cute little town and the fish and chips for lunch was good. South of Trinidad, we veered off Highway 101 to go through the Avenue of the Giants - more redwoods.  Saw a tree that had once had a shop in its base and drove through another.

We then decided that we would head down to the coast from Leggett with the intent that we would get to Fort Bragg for the night. It turned out that the road was very windy and very slow so have ended up in an isolated little village called Westport for the night.

Westport Inn is quite comfortable and even has wifi (even if I do have to sit in front of the open door to get it to work.  No take away food in town so we have frozen burritos from the local store to microwave for tea.
